PhotonWorks Solar PV & Lighting Design Engineer (Honolulu)

Photonworks Engineering seeks a Solar PV and Lighting Design Engineer. This is a multidisciplinary management position touching sales, electrical engineering, construction and project management. Engineering management is a critical function and the company seeks an individual capable of both managing the day to day tasks involved and also looking forward to building the team and infrastructure required to grow the companies engineering and implementation capabilities.

Responsibilities will include specification, design, estimating, and drafting of mechanical and electrical plans for commercial-scale solar photovoltaic systems, daylighting, solar thermal, and various other renewable energy technologies. Responsibilities also include submission of permit applications at municipal building departments, as well as some involvement with project management.

Experience with photovoltaics, electrical distribution systems, and lighting is required. Experience with Energy Efficiency Audits and lighting layout design is preferred. Knowledge of other alternative energy systems such as solar thermal is also very desirable.

4 - 5 years of related experience preferred.

Primary Responsibilities:

•Design, analyze, and develop photovoltaic and daylighting projects/systems, including the selection of system components and specifications, and the generation of CAD layouts, electrical diagrams, permitting documentation, and compelling proposal documents;
•Conduct facility lighting audits and formulate/utilize Excel model to calculate potential energy savings resulting from implementation of daylighting and/or lighting retrofits;
•Assist in developing project schedules, budgets, energy models, scopes of work, and standards.
•Refine and document processes that company follows in the design and engineering of PV systems including such things as steps to be followed, review and sign offs required, order in which engineering tasks are performed, etc. Serve as the repository for documented engineering related processes;
•Develop, refine and maintain standardized tools used by the engineering group on a daily basis in the design and engineering of PV systems. These tools include excel worksheets and CAD drawing library templates;
•Monitor the pipeline of commercial projects; anticipate engineering resources required, allocate resources to specific projects, establish milestones, monitor progress, mentor and support staff so that engineering does not bottleneck the flow of project implementation;
•Stay current on codes, standards, new solar technologies, installation best practices and support other managers as well as members of engineering team as the "expert" on the technical and engineering aspects of PV systems. Serve as the company spokesman on engineering related issues both internally and externally;
•Mentor and train members of the engineering team increasing individual and company engineering capability;
•Build-out engineering team. Interview and hire engineers as company grows;
•Assist the sales team in understanding the engineering impacts of site specific or customer specific requirements, preparing cost estimates and technical proposals. Build infrastructure that increases the company's ability to perform high quality pre-sales engineering with minimal overhead expense;
•Assist with contract review and negotiation in terms of engineering, testing or monitoring requirements;
•Assist project managers and construction managers with the successful completion of projects and participate in the resolution of field related issues that require engineering input;
•Assist purchasing manager to understand and evaluate various products from an engineering/technical standpoint. Periodically meet with vendors to learn about the technical aspects of their products. Disseminate this information appropriately throughout the company.
•Develop and maintain relationships with project team members, suppliers, and customers.

Desired Qualifications:
•Degree in electrical, mechanical, or civil engineering;
•Experienced engineering manager or construction manager for commercial /industrial construction projects;
•Highly organized and detail oriented. Able to prioritize, multitask, and manage time and resources effectively, contributing to multiple projects within the firm;
•Excellent written and verbal communication skills with demonstrated ability to convey technical concepts in a concise manner to customers, subcontractors, co-workers and executive management;
•Strong understanding of the NEC and UBC and other related codes and standards;
•Fluent in ACAD, AutoSketch, Google Sketchup, MSWord, Excel;
•Confident, assured and easy going style and able to manage to both timeline and profitability requirements;
•Ability to translate company vision into actionable plans that result increased capacity for the company to efficiently respond to and secure commercial projects;
•Able to foresee the human resources required for growth and effectively hire, mentor and build a world class team that is able to parallel our sales team.
•Ability to give presentations to internal engineering staff for informal design reviews
•Demonstrated experience with environmental technologies, organizations, and issues
•Sales and marketing helpful

Compensation:
Salary will be based on experience, comprised of a base salary and a bonus. Photonworks Engineering offers full medical/dental plan, paid holidays, vacation days, and sick days.
